De lichtgevende materialen hebben het vermogen om lichtenergie te absorberen en op te slaan. Wanneer de lichtbron wordt uitgeschakeld, geeft het materiaal het opgeslagen licht af in de vorm van een gloed, waardoor het zichtbaar is in het donker.
